If I don't have time to dig them out I just pull the few oxalis that pop up, hopefully in a decade they will finally die for good (it's been 7 years so far.). This year I've been using a hori hori knife on the oxalis and it's great! Highly recommend it. After that we spread seeds and planted out transplants and since then we have been doing spot control for both, verrrrrry slowly reducing the remaining populations. I did several rounds of digging, resprouting, digging again for both weeds.īetween the digging and the roundup we eliminated ~95% of both weeds. Even with extreme care I was only able to get the bulb around 25% of the time. Our soil is a bit heavy so to get to the bulbs I had to very carefully dig around each stem and tease it out of the soil. Now that the bulk of the oxalis is gone I don't using any herbicides.ĭigging out the bermuda grass and the remaining oxalis was incredibly labor intensive and difficult but it did the job. I have mixed feelings about using it but I don't think any of the non-herbicide methods would have removed as much oxalis and we had so. I read that roundup is most effective when the plants have lots of leaves and just start to flower as this is a time when they are sending a lot of carbon from their leaves down to their roots/bulbs-at my location that time is right about now! I did end up doing another treatment after some of the oxalis re-sprouted. ![]() I painted it onto the plants to keep it as targeted as possible (a little dish soap in the mix helps it stick to the leaves). The roundup treatment I tried to do all on the same day if possible (our lot isn't huge which helps). Before planting any of our own plants we had someone sod strip the bermuda grass (it was so thick and tough that it was serious work to get a shovel just a couple of inches into the soil), then I did a combination of digging out the bermuda grass and some isolated oxalis and using roundup on the oxalis that was growing in thick patches. When we moved into our house the yard was 90% bermuda grass and oxalis pes-caprae. Posts violating these Principals will be deleted. This sub abides by and promotes the 7x Leave No Trace Principles.
